Corruption runs deep in Nigeria

Convictions for corruption in Nigeria are so rare that they are treated as national milestones. So when the President rolled back one of the most prominent of them this week, the shock was commensurate. Nigerians has voiced their concerns over the recent pardons of corrupt officials especially that of Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the former governor of Bayelsa State.

Alamieyeseigha was convicted in 2007 after jumping bail in UK and sneaking back to Nigeria dressed as a woman. Civil society groups in Nigeria have erupted in outrage at the pardon. Nuhu Ribadu, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, himself deposed in 2008 called the act a “ negative signal and a tragedy.”

Nigerians has lost confidence in Goodluck Jonathan

But then, almost not surprising, (as a Nigerian) is the silence from the Nigeria's Judiciary.  The Justice department are our weakest link.

"It's like a game of chess. We are now waiting for the next move.

Everybody is waiting for the next move. Will Alamieyeseigha be the running mate of Jonathan in the 2015 Presidential election? Will he be running for office in the next general elections? Or probably be appointed to a cabinet office soon.

Goodluck Jonathan deliberately grants the pardons knowing this will hurt the fight for corruption.

They (President Goodluck Jonathan and his band of thieves) know what they are doing is unlawful and they will not face any consequences.
